A Vanished Kingdom – Workshops
Théâtre Volière’s Marchland wants you! Come and help make an interdisciplinary event to be presented on the closing day of the season. On three consecutive Saturdays we’ll be meeting to create our own Vanished Kingdom - an imaginary borderland with its own culture, geography, history, language... All devised by you. If you’re a visual artist, writer or performer, if you’re someone who wants to share ideas in a supportive and respectful environment, if you’re someone who enjoys playing and make believe, then join us and artists from the Marchland season to help make something truly unique. You are welcome to come and go as you please for the duration of each workshop, and even to just quietly observe the controlled chaos! It’s completely free to participate. Looking forward to meeting you at the crossroads!

A magical, intimate show for all ages from La Soupe. Part Kamishabaï (Japanese paper theatre), part pop-up storybook, Macao et Cosmage is a journey into the world of French illustrator Edy Legrand. Macao and Cosmage live happily together in a tropical island paradise until the day that civilisation comes sailing up to their shore. A simple story about the effects of colonialism and the borders between mainland France and its Outre-Mer départements. Each audience member is given their own set of headphones with which to follow the action, as the puppeteer transports you from the rainy streets of London to a lush tropical island. La Soupe’s miniature puppet booth is suitable for an audience of 12 people at a time, so please book early. Performances are in English.

Evocation
Fin de siècle Brighton. A young woman washed up on the beach is forced to revisit, time and again, her tragic history. Adult puppetry, poetry and drone noise in La Soupe’s Evocation, an experience that Edinburgh’s The Student described as truly life changing. In collaboration with poet Mick Wood and electro-acoustic composer Antoine Arlot, Alsace’s La Soupe have revisited the Pierrot Lunaire poems of Albert Giraud, creating from them a piece that takes an unflinching look at the cultural borders between the UK and continental Europe. New English translations from the original French, a powerhouse performance from Audrey L’Ebrellec, and sumptuous symbolist imagery bring out all the eroticism, savagery and playfulness of Giraud’s extraordinarily influential cycle.
Suitable for 15 years and older.

Blackbirds and Blue Helmets Matinee
What does our reaction to war and division in another country say about us? Do we start to question our own nation, our own identity? In the former communist bloc, on the borders of Europe, one nation had a strong, progressive, shared identity. Then came nationalism and war in which 100,000 people were killed. A personal reflection of two journeys to the former Yugoslavia separated by 15 years, both before and after its disintegration. Blackbirds and Blue Helmets is a dramatised talk by Alex Batesmith, Former UN War Crimes Prosecutor in Kosovo. Commissioned by Théâtre Volière for the Marchland season, it gives a rare insight into the forces behind the breakup of one of Europe’s more recently vanished kingdoms.

This seemed to us a natural pairing of two profoundly inquisitive programmes. We start with Alex Batesmith’s dramatised talk about his experiences as a UN war crimes prosecutor in Kosovo and his travels in the former Yugoslavia. The second half of the evening features cellist and violinist Fran & Flora’s extended version of their Marchland programme, their distinctive music-making interspersed with anecdotes and insights from their musicological work in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Retour Au Pays
A companion piece to Arnika exploring the multi-lingualism of border regions and its effect on their cultures. Like one of the characters in Arnika, the Alsatian poet Andre Weckmann was forcibly drafted into the Wehrmacht in WW2. After being wounded on the Russian front, he managed to desert and join the Free French. Weckmann’s poem Retour au Pays, written in three languages, is a meditation on his return to Alsace. Devised by three Alsatian theatre makers, taking Weckmann’s poem as their starting point, our Retour au Pays is a fascinating exploration of the dynamics of borderland regionalism and the ambivalent relationship of one artist with his homeland. Performed in English, French, German and Alsatian.

What can we say about our show A Vanished Kingdom? Not much, since it’s actually mostly your show and you’ve yet to devise it! What we can say is that, with the aid of artists and performers from the Marchland season, we’ll be presenting the audience with the stories, songs, dances, artwork, history, geography... of a European borderland of our participants’ collective imagination. Expect, perhaps, robust and lively debate about the tensions between regional identity and cross-cultural fertilisation, absurd flights of fancy and charming anecdotes, and a rich tapestry of differing viewpoints and traditions.
